Kensington Publishing in New York sold publishing rights to Master detective to the Goodness Publishing Company in Taiwan for a Chinese language edition, and the first copies have come out. Here is the cover.
It’s not especially colorful, but it looks like they were trying to capture a mood of tragedy and perhaps
hard-boiled crime. The pipe in the hand is a good touch, since Ellis Parker smoked a pipe and it it evokes Sherlock Holmes. The spine is on the right side to accommodate the Chinese characters. Inside, everything is Chinese except for certain words such as Spirit of St Louis, Little Bighorn, Al Capone, and flappers that apparently didn’t translate directly into Mandarin. So now I have a book that I wrote, but can’t read!
The mainland Chinese edition from Chonqing Publishing should be out in a few months, so it will be interesting to compare.
